PRESS

"Not only did I experience one of the best live concerts in a while, I actually felt the music that was presented by the featured artist VON and her band!  If you are not familiar with the name, I interviewed this sister last year and she had just dropped a CD and now the fly-poetic-diva is getting her BANG on with her dynamic singing and lyrical flow in concerts everywhere...Recently I got to catch Von perform at Crystals in Arlington, TX, and she (and her band) opened up for Javier and Calvin Richardson. There were so many sisters and brothers in the crowd screaming off the top of their lungs, I wondered if this would be a little more intimate (it was). By the way that show was awesome. "
--Kymberly Keeton, The Dallas Weekly-April 2004

"...some of the most interesting things happening in the Sankofa scene involve chanted poetry shading into sung lyrics. VON, for instance, a Dallas native now living in Chicago, is a hard-hitting poet-performer, but the real treat came when she uncorked an astonishing classic jazz singer's voice...word-spinning skills a full step above most stage poets."
--Jerome Weeks, Dallas Morning News-Feb 2002

"The charismatic Von recites a scathing refutation of C.J. Walker, who got rich with her invention of the hot comb."
--Tom Sime, Dallas Morning News-June 2001

"Featured poet Von, author of Lemonade Sweet & Sour Black Thought Power, is a Dallas native who studied political science and law before realizing her calling as an artist..."
--Catherine Cuellar, Dallas Morning News-Sep 1997

"At Reciprocity, a gallery and gathering place in Oak Cliff, Von reads from her book Lemonade Sweet & Sour Black Thought Power...offers a 10-minute testimonial on her frustrations with corporate life..."
--Linda Jones, Dallas Morning News-Aug 1997

PEOPLE

"I just wanted to drop you some love on your CD.  It's the greatest, for real!  I mean, I wish I could find more words to accurately describe how great it is, but all I can say is, my sister, you are truly and thoroughly blessed with some of that stuff that whole generations need.  I honor what you're doing and want you to know that you have our full support on this end."
--Earl Davis, Chicago

"We first met in the Apache Cafe bathroom and then you blessed me with your CD when i could not afford it.  It is like you almost knew that i needed to hear all your words.  Now your cd lives in my player...you need to know that your hymns have induced a much needed change in my thought process."
--Thembi Atong, Atlanta

"I just wanted to let you know that i can't take your CD out of my CD player.  I'm addicted to it!  Where I go, it goes.  The Slave Tree Hymnal is so thought provoking and I respect you and your writings and your outlook on life.  Listening to your work inspires me to continue writing in hopes that maybe someone will hear my work and it will inspire them to think about life more logically the way you have made me think.  Again, I appreciate you writing this CD because by listening I am being educated, and by being educated I have means on which I can question what I thought to be true."
--Tiffany Gray, Memphis

"I called Black Images, in Dallas, and unfortunately for me, there was not a single copy of The Slave Tree to be found! (whimper, sob, whimper!)  I am DETERMINED to find that book somewhere, somehow, before I take my last breath...Your book has been instrumental to my mental growth and historical awareness.  Granted...I am STILL insane, however, your book affords me some measure of medication!
--Jamiyu Amuwo, Chicago

"It was such a pleasure meeting you.  I feel very fortunate to have had the opportunity of hearing you perform your art.  It's been a while since I've been exposed to the spoken word.  It is truly an artform and you present it with heart and sincerity.  You told the "TRUTH" tonight and I hope that some of my younger peers heard you.  I wish you well on all your endeavors."
--Kara Waller, Ft. Worth

"It was a pleasure seeing you perform and meeting you Saturday night at Sankofa...I copped your Slave Tree Hymnal CD and I'm quite impressed.  Job well done!  Track #5, deep...reminds me of Marcus Garvey reminding us to take the kinks out of our minds instead of our hair.  I like how you placed the 'Waking Up In Love' track at #6 to balance out the whole feel of the CD.  Nice..."
--Elliott Williams II, Dallas
